The FIA WEC has given a first impression of the power balance for the 2025 season with the prologue at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar. With impressive times and close gaps, an extremely exciting season is on the horizon.
Key updates from the prologue
- BMW dominates the standings: Robin Frijns in the BMW M Team WRT (#20) set the fastest time in the prologue with a 1:38.971 minutes. BMW showed an extremely strong development after the cars were still outside the top 10 on the first day.
- Cadillac and Ferrari close behind: Sébastien Bourdais (Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA) and Robert Kubica (AF Corse Ferrari) followed with minimal gaps of +0.145 and +0.170 seconds respectively to the BMW. Both brands were on a par with BMW in the prologue and are hot candidates for the top positions in the first race.
- Toyota and Porsche struggle: Toyota was consistent, but not competitive enough for the lead. Porsche had technical problems, including an engine change, which cost valuable time. In addition, both teams have been given a very high BoP rating due to their World Championship successes in 2024, which also has an impact on their overall performance.
Our prediction for the season
- Favourites: BMW and Cadillac go into the new season as favourites after the four prologue sessions. At the moment, both teams have both strong pace and the necessary consistency, which could decide the first races.
- Challengers: Ferrari also has the potential to fight for victories on a regular basis and would also be a hot contender for the world championship title. Meanwhile, Alpine and Toyota still have to improve to be able to keep up this season.
- Uncertainty at Porsche: Despite technical problems, Porsche could get back into the title fight thanks to its strategic strength and experience. However, the starting position for the race in Qatar seems extremely difficult at first.
The extremely close gaps between the manufacturers promise an exciting season in which every detail – from strategy to reliability – will be decisive.
