Qatar has big plans to develop its circuit into a centre for motorsport with more endurance racing and events are conceivable.
In the Qatari desert lies one of the most high-tech racetracks in the world: Lusail International Circuit. Not only is the circuit a symbol of Qatar’s growing importance in global motorsport, it is also a testament to the rapid development of the country.
“The creation of Lusail International Circuit is a remarkable story of vision and realisation,” explains Abdulaziz Ali Al-Mohannadi, the track’s new CEO. “A world-class facility, one of the best in the Middle East. It was built in the middle of the desert within a very short space of time.”
A circuit with local roots
The 5.38-kilometre track was opened in 2004 and cost 58 million US dollars to build. Right from day one, it was clear that something special was being created. The 16 corners were specially designed for exciting racing, while artificial grass at the edge of the track surface prevent the sand from encroaching onto the tarmac.
One of Lusail International Circuit’s most impressive innovations is its lighting system. With the installation of over 3,600 lights covering the whole track, the circuit became one of the first in the world to host night races for cars and bike without headlights in 2008. This feat of engineering opened up a whole host of new opportunities for motorsport in the region.
Lusail International Circuit is far more than just a motorsport facility. It is a catalyst of growth for the entire region. “Our vision is to not only establish the track as a venue for motorsport. We want it to become a hub of racing with community activities and entertainment the whole year round,” says Al-Mohannadi.
Since opening its doors, Lusail International Circuit has hosted an impressive list of international championships. This includes MotoGP, World Superbikes, Formula 1 and now also the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The future of motorsport in the Gulf
Qatar is the only country in the region looking to strengthen its presence in the international motorsport calendar. Others are also following suit. But what are the chances of more endurance events in Qatar in the future? “Endurance racing has a special value in Qatar,” Al-Mohannadi says. “The technical complexity and teamwork appeal to the fans.”
“Our facility is built to host endurance races all the way up to 24 hours in distance,” Al-Mohannadi explains. “We are open to new race formats and partnerships to turn Lusail International Circuit into a top destination for motorsport fans. Qatar’s Vision 2030 to become a global sporting centre will help us achieve that. The Asian Le Mans Series would be the perfect addition to our strategy, and cement our position in international motorsport.”

The circuit is also actively involved in helping local drivers gain a foothold in the industry. “With our karting track and Qatar Motorsports Academy, we are looking to support the next generation of racing drivers from the region,” says Al-Mohannadi. “We see ourselves not only as a venue for global events, but also as a breeding ground for local talent.”
Lusail International Circuit reflects Qatar’s ambitions in international motorsport. The modern infrastructure and focus on a variety of race formats underscore its potential. Open the doors to other forms of endurance racing could also strengthen its position in the global motorsport calendar.
The links with the urban development project Lusail City also highlight the economic significance of the project above and beyond the sporting arena. Efforts to nurture the next generation of talent could have a long-term effect on the local motorsport culture.
Nevertheless, the circuit is still facing numerous challenges. Competition among other racetracks in the region is fierce, while the sustainability of motorsport facilities in the middle of the desert remains a hotly disputed topic. Time will tell whether Lusail International Circuit will be able to fulfil its ambitious goals and establish itself as a permanent fixture in the international motorsport landscape.
